Alpha-MSH

Endogenous Melanocortin

Also known as: Alpha-Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone · α-MSH

The natural 13-amino-acid melanocortin peptide produced by the pituitary. Acts on MC1-5 receptors with broad effects on pigmentation, inflammation, appetite, & thermoregulation.

Typical Dose

Research standard; practically replaced by analogs

Route

Intravenous (research); intranasal (some protocols)

Cycle

N/A for practical use

Half-life

~3–4 minutes

Storage

Lyophilized: 2–8°C. Reconstituted: use immediately.

Overview

Alpha-MSH is an endogenous peptide derived from proopiomelanocortin (POMC) cleavage in the pituitary & skin. It is the natural ligand for melanocortin receptors 1 through 5 & serves as the biological reference point for all synthetic melanocortin analogs (Melanotan II, PT-141, Setmelanotide).

Its very short half-life (~3–4 minutes) makes native alpha-MSH impractical for injection-based use — it is degraded almost immediately in circulation. Research use typically involves it as a reference compound. Synthetic analogs with extended half-lives are used for all clinical applications.

Quick Start Guide

1

Alpha-MSH has a ~3 min half-life. Practical administration requires analogs (Melanotan II, PT-141). Used in research as a reference standard.

Research Indications

Melanogenesis (reference)

Research Only

Endogenous MC1R agonist. Reference compound for all synthetic tanning peptides.

Anti-inflammatory (systemic)

Research Only

Inhibits NF-kB & pro-inflammatory cytokines via MC1R & MC3R on immune cells. Studied for inflammation without immunosuppression.

Peptide Interactions

Melanotan IICompatible

Melanotan II is a synthetic analog of alpha-MSH with extended half-life.

Side Effects & Safety

Common

  • Flushing (intranasal/IV administration)

Uncommon

  • Nausea

When to Stop

  • Signs of allergic reaction

How to Reconstitute

1

Use immediately after reconstitution given very short stability at physiological conditions.

Dosing math: Not typically used for subcutaneous injection; see Melanotan II or PT-141 for practical analogs.

Quality Indicators
