Overview
Nociceptin/Orphanin FQ (N/OFQ) is a 17-amino-acid peptide that is the endogenous agonist at the NOP receptor (also called ORL1), the fourth member of the opioid receptor superfamily. Despite structural homology to opioids, NOP activation produces distinct & often opposite effects: it inhibits morphine analgesia, modulates anxiety (often anxiolytic at low doses), & reduces stress responses. NOP antagonists & partial agonists are in clinical development for depression, pain, & Parkinson's disease.
