Octreotide

Somatostatin Analog

Also known as: Sandostatin · Bynfezia

A synthetic somatostatin analog with potent inhibition of GH, glucagon, insulin, & GI peptide secretion. Used for acromegaly, carcinoid syndrome, & VIPomas.

Typical Dose

100–200 mcg 3x/day SubQ (short-acting); 20–30 mg monthly (LAR depot)

Route

Subcutaneous injection or IM depot

Cycle

Ongoing for acromegaly/carcinoid; defined protocol for acute use

Half-life

~100 minutes (short-acting); controlled release over 28 days (LAR)

Storage

Short-acting: refrigerate. LAR: refrigerate vial until ready.

Overview

Octreotide is an 8-amino-acid synthetic analog of somatostatin with 45x greater potency & 30x longer half-life than native somatostatin. It inhibits secretion of GH, insulin, glucagon, gastrin, secretin, & most GI hormones via somatostatin receptor subtypes 2 & 5.

FDA approved for acromegaly (excess GH), carcinoid syndrome (serotonin-secreting tumors), & VIPomas. It is the foundational somatostatin analog used in endocrinology & gastroenterology.

Quick Start Guide

1

Clinical use only. SubQ 100–600 mcg/day in 2–4 divided doses or LAR depot monthly.

Research Indications

Acromegaly (GH excess)

Most Effective

FDA approved. Reduces GH & IGF-1 in acromegaly.

Carcinoid syndrome

Most Effective

FDA approved. Inhibits serotonin secretion, reducing flushing & diarrhea.
