Oxytocin

Neuropeptide / Bonding Hormone

Also known as: Pitocin · Syntocinon

The endogenous 9-amino-acid nonapeptide produced in the hypothalamus governing social bonding, trust, uterine contraction, & lactation. Used clinically for labor induction.

Typical Dose

24–40 IU intranasal; labor induction uses IV infusion (clinical)

Route

Intranasal (research) or IV/IM (clinical obstetrics)

Cycle

On-demand or short cycles (2–4 weeks); not for continuous use

Half-life

~1–2 minutes (IV); longer CNS effect via intranasal

Storage

Reconstituted: 2–8°C, use within 30 days.

Overview

Oxytocin is a cyclic nonapeptide produced by magnocellular neurons in the hypothalamic paraventricular & supraoptic nuclei & released from the posterior pituitary. Peripherally it drives uterine contraction & milk ejection; centrally it modulates social behavior, trust, anxiety, & pair bonding.

In research use, intranasal oxytocin has been extensively studied for prosocial & anxiolytic effects, autism spectrum disorder, social anxiety, & post-traumatic stress. Results are variable & context-dependent — oxytocin does not simply increase trust or bonding uniformly but modulates existing social salience.

Quick Start Guide

1

Intranasal: 24–40 IU per dose (40 IU = ~50 mcg), administered 30–45 min before social contexts or as prescribed.

2

Reconstitute with BAC water; transfer to nasal spray bottle.

Research Indications

Social bonding / prosocial behavior

Moderate

Intranasal trials show variable prosocial effects. Context-dependent; can increase in-group favoritism.

Social anxiety

Moderate

Reduces amygdala response to social threat. Variable results across studies.

Labor induction (clinical)

Most Effective

FDA approved IV oxytocin (Pitocin) for labor induction & augmentation.

Research Protocols

Social anxiety / prosocial research

On-demand

Dose

24 IU intranasal

Frequency

Single dose 30–45 min before activity

Route

Intranasal

Side Effects & Safety

Common

  • Headache (intranasal)
  • Nasal irritation
  • Water retention (antidiuretic effect at high doses)

Uncommon

  • Uterine hyperstimulation (IV — clinical risk)
  • Hyponatremia (IV large volumes)

When to Stop

  • Pregnancy (unless under obstetric care)
  • Signs of allergic reaction

How to Reconstitute

1

Reconstitute with 1 mL BAC water. Transfer to nasal spray for intranasal use.

Dosing math: Typical intranasal: 1 mL BAC water per 1 mg (40 IU ≈ 50 mcg based on ~1 IU = 1.25 mcg).

Quality Indicators

Good — use as normal

  • Clear, colorless solution

Acceptable

  • Very faint tint

Discard immediately

  • Cloudiness
  • Particulate

What to Expect

Per-dose effect

Intranasal onset ~30–45 min, duration ~3–5 hours. Social & anxiolytic effects during this window.
