Vasopressin

Neurohypophyseal Hormone

Also known as: AVP · ADH · Antidiuretic Hormone · Argipressin

The endogenous antidiuretic hormone controlling water reabsorption, blood pressure, & social memory. Used clinically for diabetes insipidus & septic shock.

Typical Dose

5–10 units (2.5–5 mcg) 2–3x daily (diabetes insipidus); IV infusion (shock)

Route

Subcutaneous, IM, or IV

Cycle

Ongoing for DI; short-term IV for shock

Half-life

~10–20 minutes

Storage

2–8°C.

Overview

Vasopressin (arginine vasopressin, AVP) is a cyclic nonapeptide produced by the hypothalamus that acts on V1 receptors (vasoconstriction) & V2 receptors (renal water reabsorption). Deficiency causes diabetes insipidus; excess causes SIADH (syndrome of inappropriate ADH secretion).

Research interest centers on the V1b (V3) receptor in the amygdala & hippocampus, which modulates stress response, aggression, & social memory — complementary but distinct from oxytocin's social effects. Clinical use is primarily for septic shock vasopressor support & diabetes insipidus.

Quick Start Guide

1

Clinical use primarily. 5–10 units IM/SubQ for diabetes insipidus. Septic shock: IV infusion under ICU monitoring.

Research Indications

Diabetes insipidus

Most Effective

Replaces deficient AVP in central DI. Desmopressin (analog) is preferred for longer duration.

Septic shock vasopressor

Most Effective

Used alongside norepinephrine in septic shock management to restore vasomotor tone.
